Air Bags
Air Bags
An Air bag is a flexible membrane or covering that is inflatable and contain air or some other gas. They are usually placed on both driver and passenger sides. Air bags are said to reduce the death risk by about 30% in head on collisions. If a vehicle collides with something, airbags can inflate in less than tenth of a second and protect passengers from forces of the head-on collision.

Location of Air Bags
Air bags are usually mounted on the following locations:
  • Steering wheel
  • Dashboard
  • Seat
  • Doors
Parts of Air Bag
An air bag consists of three parts:
  • The bag itself
Made of nylon fabric and is folded into the steering wheel or dashboard.
  • Sensor
The sensor directs the bag to inflate.
  • The inflation system
Uses of Air Bags
Important uses of airbags are:
  • Most commonly used for cushioning, particularly after very rapid inflation in the case of an automobile collision.
  • Prevent severe injuries in case of front-end collision.
  • Act as a safety equipment in vehicles.
